Professional matted hair treatment and dematting service from experienced UK specialists. Compassionate, private and judgement-free help to save severely matted hair.
Matted Hair Doesn't Automatically Mean Cutting It Off
If your hair has become severely tangled or matted, you may have reached the point where you feel there is no way back. Perhaps you’ve tried brushing it yourself and haven’t been able to get through it. Maybe somebody has told you that your only option is to cut it short or shave it off. Or perhaps you’ve been putting off asking for help because you feel embarrassed about how your hair has become.
Please know that you can talk to us without fear of judgement.
At Serenity Loves, we provide a specialist professional hair dematting and detangling service for people experiencing anything from significant tangling to extremely severe matting. Our priority is always to try to save as much of your hair as safely and realistically possible.
We have helped clients with hair that initially appeared impossible to detangle, including cases where the hair had formed into large, dense areas of matting close to the scalp. Every head of hair is different and we can never promise the outcome before assessing it, but severely matted hair does not necessarily mean that it has to be cut off.
Sometimes it simply needs time, patience, specialist techniques and somebody willing to try.
What Is Professional Matted Hair Treatment?
Professional matted hair treatment is very different from simply brushing out a few knots.
When individual strands of hair become intertwined and compressed together over time, they can form dense areas of matting that become increasingly difficult to separate.
In severe cases, the hair can become one solid mass.
Trying to force a brush through this type of matting can be extremely uncomfortable and can cause unnecessary breakage or damage.
Our professional dematting service involves carefully working through the hair section by section, gradually loosening and separating the matting while continually assessing the condition of the hair and scalp.
There isn’t a quick fix.
It is detailed, patient work and severe cases can take many hours — sometimes over several appointments.
But when someone believes they are going to lose most or all of their hair, the difference that professional detangling can make can be enormous.
Can Severely Matted Hair Really Be Saved?
Sometimes, yes.
And we’ve seen first-hand why it is worth assessing the hair before assuming that cutting it off is the only option.
How much hair can be retained depends on several factors, including:
* how tightly the hair is matted
* how close the matting is to the scalp
* how long it has been matted
* the condition and strength of the hair
* whether products, oils or water have previously been applied
* whether there is significant shedding trapped within the matting
* the condition and sensitivity of the scalp
* previous chemical services or damage
* the client’s comfort throughout treatment.
In some cases, there will inevitably be hair loss or breakage.
It is also completely normal for a surprisingly large amount of loose hair to come away during dematting. We naturally shed hair every day, and when hair is severely matted, that shed hair can become trapped inside the mat rather than falling away normally.
This can make the amount of hair released during treatment look alarming, but it does not necessarily mean that all of that hair has been pulled from the scalp during the appointment.
Our aim isn’t to promise a miracle.
**Our aim is to give your hair the best possible chance.**

Why Does Hair Become Severely Matted?
There is a misconception that badly matted hair is simply caused by somebody not looking after themselves. The reality is much more complicated. We have seen how quickly hair care can become overwhelming when someone is dealing with difficult circumstances.
Severe matting can happen for many reasons, including periods of illness, hospital stays, reduced mobility, physical disability, mental-health difficulties, grief, overwhelming life circumstances, sensory difficulties, changes in medication or routine, caring responsibilities, hair extensions, difficulties managing certain hair types, or simply becoming unable to keep on top of tangling before it progresses.
Sometimes there isn’t one obvious reason at all. A small knot can gradually become larger. Loose hair becomes caught within it, friction makes it tighter, and eventually the person reaches a point where they no longer know where to begin. Embarrassment can then make asking for help even harder. Weeks become months and the problem becomes progressively more difficult.
This is exactly why judgement has no place in our service.
You don’t need to justify what happened. You don’t need to apologise. You simply need somewhere safe to start.
A Hairdresser for Matted Hair – Why Specialist Experience Matters
Not every standard hair appointment is suitable for severe matting.
Not every standard hair appointment is suitable for severe matting.
Professional dematting requires significant time, patience and an understanding that the goal isn’t simply to get a comb through the hair as quickly as possible.
Our team work methodically through the hair, adapting the approach as we learn more about the condition of each section.
The process may involve carefully separating compacted areas, removing trapped shed hair, working through progressively smaller tangles and regularly reassessing what can realistically be retained.
For particularly severe cases, this can be a lengthy process.
That is why we don’t squeeze a matted-hair client between conventional salon appointments.
This is a specialist service and is treated as such.
What Happens at a Matted Hair Consultation?
We understand that walking into a salon to show somebody severely matted hair can feel incredibly daunting.
That’s why the first step is simply allowing us to understand what you’re dealing with.
Before agreeing to treatment, we need to assess the extent and density of the matting, the condition of the visible hair and scalp and approximately how much time we believe may be required.
Where appropriate, we may initially ask for clear photographs or video footage of the hair so that we can get a better understanding of the situation before arranging treatment.
For complex cases, we may recommend a more detailed consultation.
We will explain honestly what we believe may be achievable.
We will never promise that every strand can be saved, because until we begin working through severe matting, nobody can know exactly what is happening inside it.
What we **will** promise is that we will approach your hair with patience, professionalism and respect
What Happens During Professional Hair Dematting?
Every appointment is individual, but treatment will generally involve gradually separating the matted areas and working through the hair in manageable sections.
We work carefully rather than aggressively.
With severe matting, progress can sometimes appear slow at first. Large sections may need to be loosened little by little before individual strands can begin to separate.
As sections are released, trapped shed hair and debris can be removed and the remaining hair can gradually be worked through.
We will communicate with you throughout the appointment and encourage you to tell us if you need a break or if something feels uncomfortable.
For some clients, treatment can be completed in one appointment. For others, it can take many hours or multiple sessions.
We have even worked on exceptionally complex cases where the process has continued across more than one day.
The objective remains the same:
Preserve as much viable hair as possible while treating the person sitting in our chair with dignity.
A Private, Compassionate & Judgement-Free Salon
For many people, the hardest part of dealing with matted hair isn’t the hair itself. It’s asking for help.
Some clients have avoided salons because they are frightened of what somebody might say.
Others worry that staff or other clients will stare. Some haven’t told friends or family how severe the problem has become.
We understand that.
Where required and where possible, we can take additional steps to make the experience feel more private and comfortable.
If you don’t want to look at your hair while it is being worked on, please tell us.
If you need breaks, tell us.
If you are anxious, tell us.
If you’d rather not explain how the matting happened, you don’t have to.
There is no lecture waiting for you at Serenity Loves.
There is simply a team who wants to help.

How Much Does a Hair Dematting Service Cost?
Professional dematting is charged according to the time and expertise required because no two cases are the same.
A relatively contained area of matting may take considerably less time than hair that has become densely matted across the entire head.
Our professional detangling services are currently charged at approximately **£60–£80 per hour depending on the stylist carrying out the treatment.**
Following assessment, we will give you as much information as possible about the likely time and cost involved.
However, with very severe matting, it isn’t always possible to know exactly how long treatment will take until we begin working inside the matted areas.
We believe in being transparent about that from the beginning.
Please check current pricing with the salon when enquiring, as prices may change.
Travelling to Serenity Loves for Matted Hair Treatment
Serenity Loves is based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, and we increasingly hear from people looking for matted hair specialists from across the UK.
We understand that specialist help may not be available close to home, and some clients choose to travel significant distances to reach us.
Our salon has free parking and we can discuss the practicalities of a longer appointment with you when arranging your treatment.
If you are travelling to us, please let us know so that we can take this into consideration when discussing your consultation and appointment.
When a Matted Hair Story Reached Hundreds of Thousands of People
When we began sharing more openly about our specialist detangling work, we didn’t anticipate the response. Our social-media posts showing the reality of severe matting and what can sometimes be achieved through patient professional treatment went on to reach hundreds of thousands of people.
But something much more important happened behind those numbers. People began contacting us. Some had been living with severely matted hair in silence. Others told us they hadn’t realised professional help existed. Some had assumed their only option would be to shave or cut their hair. And many told us that embarrassment had stopped them seeking help.
It reinforced something we had already begun to understand:
There are far more people living with severely matted hair than most of us realise.
That’s why we continue to talk openly about this service. Not to embarrass the people who need it — but to reach the person sitting at home searching:
“What do I do if my hair is completely matted?”
If that’s you, we want you to know there may be another option.
Helping Make Professional Dematting More Accessible
As demand for this service increased, we also became increasingly aware of another problem.
Professional dematting is extremely labour-intensive, and severe cases can require many hours of specialist salon time.
For somebody already experiencing difficult personal circumstances, the cost of treatment can become another barrier to getting help.
Our salon community therefore began fundraising to help us **partially subsidise selected dematting treatments for people experiencing genuine financial difficulty**.
Through salon fundraising and online donations, our clients, team and wider community have helped us create opportunities to support people who may otherwise have been unable to access professional treatment.
Funds are limited and financial support cannot be guaranteed, but we are incredibly proud of what our community has helped us achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions About Matted Hair Treatment
Will you have to cut my hair?
Not necessarily. Our aim is to preserve as much viable hair as possible. However, every case is different and there may occasionally be areas where damage or matting makes some cutting unavoidable. We will discuss this with you rather than making assumptions before assessing your hair.
Can extremely matted hair be detangled?
Some extremely severe matting can be successfully worked through, although the time required and amount of hair that can be retained varies considerably. We need to assess each case individually.
Does dematting hurt?
Severe matting can create tension close to the scalp and some parts of treatment may feel uncomfortable. We work carefully, communicate throughout and can take breaks when required.
How long does professional dematting take?
There is no standard appointment length. Treatment may take several hours and exceptionally severe cases can require multiple sessions or treatment over more than one day.
I’m embarrassed. Will the salon judge me?
No. We have worked with people experiencing severe matting for many different reasons. Our service is deliberately compassionate and judgement-free.
Can I send photographs before coming into the salon?
Yes. In many cases photographs or video can help us understand the severity of the matting before arranging the next step. We will explain what we need when you contact us.
Do you treat clients from outside Peterborough?
Yes. Clients looking for specialist matted hair treatment may travel to Serenity Loves from outside Peterborough. If you are travelling a significant distance, please tell us when enquiring.
How much does professional hair dematting cost?
Our specialist service is currently approximately £60–£80 per hour depending on the stylist providing treatment. Because severe cases vary considerably, the total cost depends on the amount of time required.
